Bet with your head

Our picks are model estimates, not sure things. Even our most confident picks lose, and every one of those losses stays on our record. Treat betting as paid entertainment, not a way to make money.

Set a budget before you bet, and only bet money you can afford to lose. Never chase losses with bigger bets. Don't bet when you're upset, stressed or drinking. Take breaks, and keep betting from crowding out work, family and the rest of your life.

Warning signs

Betting more than you planned, or more than you can afford. Chasing losses. Borrowing money or using bill money to bet. Lying to people about how much you bet. Feeling anxious or irritable when you're not betting. Betting to escape problems. If any of these sound familiar, it's worth talking to someone. Calling 1-800-GAMBLER is free and confidential.

Tools that help

Every licensed sportsbook lets you set deposit, wager and time limits, take a cooling-off break, or close your account. Most states also run a voluntary self-exclusion program that blocks you from betting at licensed sportsbooks for a set time. Your sportsbook's responsible gaming page and 1-800-GAMBLER can walk you through them.
